Stainkamp Appointed as Assistant Athletic Media Relations Director
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Oct. 23, 2013) – Following a one-year stint as a Media Relations Assistant at LIU Post, Mike Stainkamp (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) was hired Wednesday as the school’s Assistant Athletic Media Relations Director, Director of Athletics Bryan Collins (Sayville, N.Y.) announced. He starts his new position, effective Monday, Oct. 28.
In that capacity, Stainkamp will assist with the promotion and publicity of the Pioneers’ 15 NCAA Division II varsity programs. He will serve as the primary media contact for women’s basketball and baseball in 2013-14.
“We are please to welcome Michael to our Pioneer family,” Collins discussed about the hiring. “In a short time, he has demonstrated a great initiative, work ethic and passion for LIU Post Athletics, and our media relations department. We, at LIU Post, believe he will be a great asset, as we move forward towards creating new venues to communicate with our alumni and fans.”
He also added: “Under Ian’s (Schraier) direction, I am sure we will continue to grow professionally as a department.”
Stainkamp, a 2010 graduate of St. John’s University, brings over a plethora of journalistic experience. He worked for Baseball Player Magazine from 2009-11, and currently writes for metroBASEBALL Magazine, which is a quarterly publication focusing on amateur baseball in the Queens and Brooklyn areas. Plus, Stainkamp spent one year (2012) as a Social Media Coordinator for Major League Baseball Advanced Media.
“It’s a great honor to join the Athletic Media Relations Department on a full-time basis,” Stainkamp stated. “The LIU Post athletic programs have seen great success in recent years. I hope to contribute to an already hard-working group, as we look to broaden the popularity and awareness of the institution’s 15 varsity teams.”
Stainkamp is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Journalism, Media Studies and Public Relations from Hofstra. His expected graduation is December 2013.
I grew up on Long Island, attending St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay. At St. Dominic, I was involved in many different extracurricular activities including performing arts, roller hockey and baseball. Upon graduating in 2007, I attended St. John’s University from 2007-10, earning my Bachelor of Science Degree in Journalism, graduating one semester early. While at St. John’s, I was a member of the Campus Ministry Church Choir. I am currently pursuing my Master Degree at Hofstra University. I am the Co-Managing Editor of Long Island Report, a student run publication at Hofstra with the intention of widening my knowledge of the journalism industry. Most recently, I spent time as a Social Media Coordinator at MLB.com the official website of Major League Baseball.
I have interned at News 12 Long Island as a Sports Producer, NHL.com as a Staff Writer and Digital Producer and also at MLB.com as an Editorial Producer and Social Editorial Producer. In addition to my internship experience, I was the Director of Digital Media for Baseball Player Magazine a quarterly Long Island baseball publication. I also contribute to the sports website, Bleacher Report and I stay around the baseball world as an Assistant Coach for the Freshman team at St. Dominic.
